A New Contract with Life
A Memoir of Loss, Faith, and Finding Home
A story of loss, faith, and the long, quiet road back to oneself.
by Jorge Luis Perez
About the Book
This memoir traces a journey through devastation and uncertainty, through the quiet moments where God showed up unexpectedly, and through the hard, gradual work of learning to belong to your own life again.
Along the way, Jorge was forced to release more than grief. He had to let go of old identities, inherited expectations, and beliefs that no longer reflected who he truly was. What emerged was not a new person, but a deeper return to the person he had always been beneath the noise of fear, obligation, and loss.
It is a story about what we carry, what we are forced to release, and what is waiting for us on the other side of surrender.
There are losses that don't announce themselves. They arrive quietly, and by the time you understand what has gone, you are already a different person — standing in a life that no longer fits, wondering how to find your way back home.

Why Readers Connect With This Story
This memoir is for anyone who has felt called to leave behind an old version of themselves and step into a deeper, more authentic life shaped by faith, courage, and transformation.
Identity
At its core, this is a book about becoming who you truly are. Jorge does not find a new self — he finds his way back to the one that was always there, waiting beneath fear and obligation.
Faith
The book does not preach. It bears witness. For readers of faith and readers who have lost it, it offers something rare: honesty without judgment, and presence without easy answers.
Surrender
The hardest chapters are not about what was lost, but about what had to be willingly released — the identities, certainties, and inherited beliefs that no longer rang true.
Transformation
Every chapter is an act of becoming. Readers who have wondered who they are after a season of upheaval will find something here they did not expect: recognition.
Grief & Loss
Loss is present throughout these pages — not as the whole story, but as the passage that made everything else possible. It is treated honestly, and with compassion.
Courage
Beginning again takes more than hope. It takes the willingness to be uncertain, to be seen, and to trust that what is unfolding — even when it is hard — is still good.
The Lighthouse and the Compass
Some lights guide us. Some journeys require us to choose a direction.
Why This Title?
Some titles are chosen. Others are lived.
This title was born the day my spirit was shattered. After leaving the operating room emotionally exhausted, I realized it was not only my body that had reached its limit. Something much deeper had broken within me.
The compass that had guided my life for years had suddenly lost its direction. For the first time, I understood that although I believed I knew how to heal a human body, I no longer knew how to heal my own soul.
That moment became the beginning of a new covenant — not with the world, not with success, and not with the expectations of others, but with the deepest truth of my own soul.
That became my new contract with life.
Healing does not always arrive as certainty. Sometimes it begins as the quiet willingness to believe that life may still be asking something beautiful of us.
